This December as we enjoy holiday meals, let’s not forget where our food comes from. This month we are celebrating your impact on healthy food and farms across Minnesota. Protecting, conserving and restoring our environment may not sound like an agricultural endeavor, but healthy farming and food are some of the most impactful ways to improve our natural landscape. Our member, Land Stewardship Project has offices all across the Minnesota countryside and is dedicated to uplifting farmers and rural Minnesotans to embrace their role as environmental heroes.
Mission: The Land Stewardship Project (LSP) is a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1982 to foster an ethic of stewardship for farmland, to promote sustainable agriculture, and to develop sustainable communities.
Land Stewardship Project is dedicated to creating transformational change in our food and farming system. LSP’s work has a broad and deep impact, from new farmer training and local organizing, to federal policy and community-based food systems development. At the core of all their work are the values of stewardship, justice and democracy.
Impact: Since July 2018 LSP has trained over 1100 Minnesotans in soil health workshops and field days. They teach farmers to implement soil-building methods that improve water quality, stabilize the climate, sequester carbon, and grow farm profitability.

The Hersheys say networking through LSP played a key role in helping their family transition to grazing, and eventually, organic milk production. Similar networking can help retiring farmers connect with each other and learn tips for passing on their operations to the next generation. “Retiring farmers can share with each other what’s working — or what’s not,” says Arlene.
