Minnesota (map)
Most birds migrate at night and can be drawn off course by tall, lighted structures in their flight path. Many birds are killed or injured in collisions with buildings or drop from exhaustion after circling them, reluctant to fly out of the light. Lights Out programs can dramatically reduce these collisions. To learn more go to: http://mn.audubon.org/birds-science-education/project-birdsafe/lights-out-program

Weeding Wednesdays
Sep 8, 2010 at 4:00 pm (add this)
Weeding at the 28th Street Garden along the Midtown Greenway (map)
While planting trees is important, it's not the last step in ensuring a green future for the Twin Cities. Left to their own devices, the weeds along the Midtown Greenway would steal all the nutrients from the soil and grow so tall you wouldn't even know there were any trees out there.
You can stop the maniacal weeds from overtaking our newly planted trees by volunteering a couple hours of your time to yank them out of the ground. It's relaxing (you can turn your brain off), satisfying (you can see the immense pile of weeds you've slain after two hours), and great for trees!
You can see the locations of all our upcoming Weeding Wednesdays on this Google Map.This week's weeding is limited to five weeders. It will be at the 28th Street garden, along the Midtown Greenway where it intersects with 28th St.To regis...

Rum River Cleanup
Sep 11, 2010 at 8:30 am (add this)

Friends of the Rum River is hosting their 5th annual Rum River Cleanup! The Rum River runs from Lake Mille Lacs to the Mississippi River in Anoka.
Paddlers and volunteers (this is an in-the-water cleanup) will meet at 9:30 a.m. for a half-hour introduction to the cultural and geological history of the uppermost stretch of the Rum River at the Mille Lacs Kathio State Park Interpretive Center.
Volunteers will then move canoes and kayaks to the parking lot of the boat access area just south of the interpretive center, east side of the Rum (plenty of room for vehicles). Volunteers will travel upriver, do a very short portage around the dam at the south end of Lake Ogechie, then canoe the perimeter of Lake Ogechie, up to Lake Mille Lacs. Anyone interested can venture out into the Big Lake (weather permitting) and do some clean-up along the shoreline, then return downriver to the boat access.
Cleanup equipment and a limited number of boats (see next paragraph) will be provided as well as a free lunch. Volunteers should be out of the river around 3 p.m., but can take as much time as they want. It is a six- to eight-mile round trip.
All those assisting with the cleanup will be able to enter Mille Lacs Kathio State Park at no charge. Stop first at the park entrance for a work permit. The park is also offering the use of six canoes at no charge.
If you would like to reserve a canoe or need a canoe partner, contact Ralph Borchardt at 763-689-0812. For other questions and to RSVP, contact Kriste at RumRiverNews@yahoo.com.

Oak Savanna Interpretive Tour
Sep 15, 2010 at 5:00 pm (add this)
Near 36th and West River Parkway, Minneapolis (map)
Carolyn Carr, an ecologist with Ecological Strategies, will lead an interpretive tour of the special Oak Savanna in the Mississippi River Gorge. Carolyn has years of experience conducting educational and outreach programs to protect open space and restore natural areas, particularly in urban areas, and has been an integral part of the work in this section of the River Gorge.
Gorge Stewards volunteers have embraced and played a key role in the health of this community gem. This area harbors the highest quality plant communities remaining in the River Gorge, including a mesic prairie and a remnant oak brushland/woodland undergoing restoration to oak savanna. Through Oak Savanna Workdays and other River Gorge events, volunteers remove invasive species, pick up litter, collect seeds, plant native species, and more. Thanks to their countless hours, not to mention the collaboration of many partner organizations, the area that was once a buckthorn thicket now has renewed life.
Read more about the history of this oak savanna at this oak savanna workday listing.
Ready to register?
Please note that while this tour is free, pre-registration is required as capacity is limited, and early sign-up highly encouraged. This page will be updated and note when the event fills. Please note there is another Oak Savanna tour offered as well this day. To register go to: http://ostour.eventbrite.com/?ref=ebtn

Hawk Weekend
Sep 16, 2010 at 6:00 pm (add this)
Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve in Duluth, Minnesota (map)
The Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve in Duluth, Minnesota is one of North America's best places to experience the spectacle of the fall raptor migration. It was designated as the first Audubon Minnesota Important Bird Area. Migrating birds, including raptors and passerines, concentrate in impressive numbers at the western tip of Lake Superior. Some travel from as far away as the Arctic and pass through Duluth on their way to their wintering areas to the south. Reluctant to cross a large body of water, migrants funnel down the North Shore along the ridges that overlook the city. On a good day, visitors may see hundreds—even thousands—of birds flying by! Come and celebrate the migration at our annual Hawk Weekend!
Friday evening is "An Evening for Everyone", including a social and refreshments, live birds, "Guess-the-Number-of-Hawks Contest", and a presentation by Kim Risen, naturalist, author, photographer, and tour leader. He will present on birding and nature in Aitkin County, Minnesota from his award-winning book - “Aitkin County, Naturally!”. Kim was the founder and publisher of NatureScape News, a tabloid news magazine emphasizing the FUN of birding, butterflying and the wonders of nature.
Saturday will offer a variety of field trips and seminars away from the Ridge, and hawkwatching, interpretive programs, banded hawk and passerine demonstrations, optics displays, merchandise, and refreshments at the Hawk Ridge Main Overlook. Saturday evening offers a social and refreshments, our annual member meeting, a fabulous "sustainable" dinner, awards, a silent auction, and a keynote address by Dr. William Bowerman, Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Toxicology at Clemson University. His presentation is titled, “Sea Eagles as Environmental Messengers – What They Tell Us About The Health of Our Planet”. Dr. Bowerman has been studying bald eagle ecology and effects of environmental pollutants in the Great Lakes region since 1984.
Sunday will offer a variety of field trips and activities at the Hawk Ridge Main Overlook. All activities at the Hawk Ridge Main Overlook are open to the public; everything else requires registration. For more details about Hawk Weekend, go to www.hawkridge.org or contact us at 218.428.6209 or mail@hawkridge.org.

All About Carp

Mounds View High School, 1900 Lake Valentine Rd., Arden Hills, MN (map)
The Rice Creek Watershed District will be hosting a public workshop on common carp and their affect on wildlife and water quality.
The invasive common carp has been in Minnesota lakes since around 1900, and have spread across the state through rivers, lakes and ponds. Carp have drastically altered the ecosystems they inhabit, negatively impacting waterfowl habitat, fisheries and water quality.
RCWD has enlisted the help of two experts in the field — Dr. Peter Sorensen of the University of Minnesota and Ann Geisen of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will cover carp history, biology and their impacts on waterfowl and water quality.
Note: The presenters will focus on cammon carp but may also briefly touch on Asian, i.e. silver or bighead carp.
No pre-registration required.

Green Futures Planting (Rich Valley Nature Center)
Oct 16, 2010 at 8:00 am (add this)
1841 - 105th Street East, Inver Grove Heights (Rich Valley Nature Center) (map)
Tree Trust has partnered with the City of Inver Grove Heights to plant approximately 75 trees in Rich Valley Nature Center as part of our Green Futures initiative.
This planting will be the seventh planting made possible by our Green Futures initiative - a program that ensures a healthy tree canopy for the Twin Cities by turning individual donations into trees.
Of the park's 700 trees, 100 are ash trees that are threatened by the recent arrival of emerald ash borer to the Twin Cities metro. This planting will pre-forest the park and prevent the loss of shade, wind breaks and other benefits trees bring to the park.
We are looking for 35-40 volunteers to help put these trees in the ground.
This event is great for individuals, families, and small groups, and people of all age...

OWLS Outing to Cedar Creek Research Station

Did you know one of the longer-term controlled research projects on the influence of fire on the environment is underway right here in Minnesota? Did you know that this research is going on within an hour's drive of anywhere in the Twin Cities?
Your opportunity to know more about this research, and a host of related Long Term Ecological Research is coming up this fall. On Tuesday, October 19, 2010 the OWLS (the Older, Wiser, and Lively members of the North Star Chapter of the Sierra Club) are planning at day at the University of Minnesota facilities at the Cedar Creek Natural History Area (CCNHA) at 2660 Fawn Lake Drive N. E in East Bethel, Minnesota. "Cedar Creek research focuses on gaining mechanistic and synthetic understanding of the functioning of ecosystems and the impacts of human actions on the services that ecosystems provide society," is a quote from a brochure describing the work underway there.
The plan for the day is as follows:
* We are invited to arrive for "check-in" from 10:00 am to 10:30; the coffee pot will be on. This will also be a time to check out the posters in the reception area about the various research projects at this center.
* 10:30 to 11:10; presentation by a member of the CCNHA staff on their projects.
* 11:10 to 11:30; Q & A session about CCNHA projects.
* Enjoy your-own bag lunch at the research center. Beverages will be available.
* At 12:30 divide into two groups depending on your interest:
o Option 1: join in car-pools for a guided tour of research project sites.
o Option 2: drive a short distance to East Bethel-Cedar Creek Fish Lake Nature Trails. Take a hike along the shores of Fish Lake. There are two options: a 3/4 mile interpretive trail hugging the east shore of Fish Lake, or Hike along a 1 1/2 mile (one-way) primitive trail that extends from the south shore of Fish Lake through the marshes to the west. Both trails are accessible from the same parking area, so, of course, you can do both if you have the interest.
* 2:30 Head for home well informed on exciting research going on to better understand changes occurring in our environment, and for those so inclined, refreshed following a visit with nature.
If you would like more information about the work at Cedar Creek you can check out their web-site at: www.cedarcreek.umn.edu. As a partner with the National Science Foundation Cedar Creek is also part of the Long Term Ecological Research efforts. More information about this network see: www.lternet.edu. Note: on this site, the code for Cedar Creek is CDR.
The cost of this event will be covered by the North Star Chapter. Donations will be accepted for beverages provided at lunch. Please RSVP to Glen and Donna at hamble001@comcast.net or by phone at 651-315-3412 or 651-604-9340.
